WCLS Updates

• Christine from WCLS stopped by to discuss the WCLS plans for the Sumas Library

  • Several FOSL members were impacted by the flood. Luckily Nancy’s kitchen is fine
  • Sumas Library is out of service for a while but overall the damage was manageable. Significant improvement compared to the damage from the 2021 flood
  • Only lost 39 books out of the entire Sumas Library collection!
  • All technology and most furniture was saved
  • Able to get back in early so cleanup was able to take place prior to mold
  • WCLS is talking with the City of Sumas about how we can plan and make improvements for future floods
  • City pays for the shell of building (walls, floors, ceiling, electrical), WCLS pays for upgrades and internals
  • Sumas pick ups can happen at the drop box or pick up at the Everson Library
  • How can people help? The WCLF is the best way to support but the hope is insurance take scare of most

• Library Explorations Sept-Dec issue was released

  • Events are primarily free of charge
  • Look over the list of events and help promote!
  • Whatcom Reads: Solito: A Memoir
  • Free painting workshops in native folk art style
  • Exploring Salvadorian Cuisine at Bellingham Technical College!

Merle Fullner

• Paul Fullner’s father passed away recently. Funeral services will take place on Sautrday, January 10th at Christ Fellowship Church
• FOSL created and signed a card to let Paul know we are thinking of him and missing him at this meeting of friends

  • Movie in the Park - July 24
  • End of Summer Reading Event (cancelled?) - Pending

• Look into an Escape Room event. Other WCLS library branches are hosting an escape room so we want to look into it
  • Wilderness Skills Escape Room by Robby Holmes of Mountainside Nature School
  • Check with Deming Library

Adult Social Spring Event

• Venue: El Nopal or Bob’s
  • both include a bar
  • catered event
• Seek support from businesses outside of Sumas for goods or financial for reduced ticket price
• Pi Day so maybe still do a pie auction; reach out to neighboring bakeries
• Match Game?
