UV light — has instructions and note next to it, library staff will update this with acknowledgment to FOSL for purchase & add library logo
Pansies — purchased and planted by Meg K prior to events held on 3/31 to make the front look nice
Coloring contest mailer — 12 entries turned in so far. Some got completed and turned in quickly. Library staff have given out a number of extra entries. FOSL and library staff will continue to remind people to turn in entries by Saturday, April 6th (less than a week after this meeting) via social media and in-person. 150 entries will be given out at Bingo night on April 5th
Christine’s farewll party — good representation of library staff, NF staff, WCLS administrative staff, FOSL members and patrons. Sarah E (FOSL head baker) made an amazing carrot cake and chocolate chip cookies. Many other patrons said good-bye to Christine throughout the day. New staff person hired, will probably not be seen in Sumas for a couple of weeks as he goes through training in some other branches firs
E. New Business
Spring Cleaning Bingo — held Friday, April 5th at the Sumas Christian Reformed Church. Doors open to public at 6pm, games to start at 6:30. Doors will be unlocked for FOSL volunteers at 5:30. Nancy & Samantha don’t get off work until 6pm, so would love other FOSL volunteers to show up earlier than 6 to help set up any last-minute items.
Nancy and Samantha will do the calling of the numbers. Nancy purchased a bingo set for FOSL & a large board to indicate the numbers that have been called so attendees can have a visual reference.
Other volunteer needs for the night are: people to help hand out bingo cards & markers (and coloring sheets!) and take cleaning item entrance fee; bingo checkers for when people think they have won
Bruce B. will provide and set-up the sound system
Dinner potluck soup/chili provided by donation, bake sale items will be priced. Sarah E & Brett E. will do the concessions. Still looking for people to provide soup/chili (like a potluck thing) and bake sale items. Can also provide purchased items such as rolls or chips. Sign-up sheet at: Bake Sale Volunteer Form
Maximum 1 win/person/night
Samantha will shop the stores in Sumas to purchase prizes for kids (12 & under); plans to spend $200 - $300
Downtown clean-up day — Saturday April 6th 9am – 12pm. FOSL will provide refreshments, gloves, and garbage bags. Meet at City Hall garage (behind city hall)
Lizette C & Craig A will man the refreshment/garbage bag table. Erin will make coffee in the morning and bring to city hall garage. Meg will map out areas with garbage for volunteers to hit, Meg will have a family member pick-up donuts. Bruce B & Lee D will each provide a truck or truck & trailer to pick up garbage bags which will allow volunteers to leave full garbage bags around rather than need to walk them back to the dumpster.
Coloring contest — see above in notes for some information.
Winners will be contacted Friday, April 12 by either Paul F or Samantha D. Asked to be at library on Saturday, April 13th between 12:30 – 12:45 to publicly announc winners, give winners prize money and certificate, and take picture. Guardians of youth winners will need to sign a waiver for photo use purposes – these will be provided by WCLS. Brett E would like a scan of all the entries as well as the winners so they can be posted on FOSL website. Winner in each category will be posted on FOSL website, FOSL Facebook page (and then shared to Sumas Library Facebook page)
National Library Week: nothing planned due to busy prior week of FOSL events
Samantha is planning on applying for various grants over the next month or so for additional funding for FOSL programs and events
Cayla asked for funds to provide snacks during chess time on Wednesdays and for a new cornhole set (either made by her father-in-law or purchased. Cayla will price compare)
F. Community News
Williams Gas — Lizette brought to everybody’s attention that Willams Gas is currently doing a year-long, $80 million upgrade/expansion to the facilities located on Jones Road. Noone at the FOSL meeting had heard of this expansion
Meg told us about a short news article about a potential International shipping and transportation canal from the Nooksack River to the Fraiser River. Meg did a great job with this story and had most of the attendees believing this was true while she read most of this article – she did a great April Fools joke prank!
Lee announced he was talking to Nicole (at Loca Mocha) and some others about getting the Sumas Chamber of Commerce going again
G. Next Meeting
Meeting concluded at 7:30pm
