WCLS News

Sumas Library Updates

  • Nothing is final but library repairs seem to be winding down and working on finishing
  • Library elements (shelving, etc.) are coming along
  • Main barrier is official handoff and occupancy permit
  • Realistically able to meet next month at the Sumas Library! Again, not official but it could happen.
  • Senior/Community Center side seems a bit behind but still moving along. They seem to be waiting on something that may hold this up a bit
  • June 22nd is the start of Summer Reading and we hope the Sumas Library is open for that
  • A conference room is being added to the Sumas Library and is already approved, but it won’t be ready when we reopen.
    • The meeting room will be finished after reopening, hopefully later this year.
    • Extra funding will be needed due to rising costs. WCLS will seek funding through foundation outreach
    • Room with comfortably fit 4, maybe 6
    • To be used for tele-medicine, zoom calls, small book clubs, etc.

WCLS Events

  • New edition of WCLS Explorations newsletter!
  • Sumas has many events coming up this summer but that all is pending library repairs
  • Summer Reading program kicks off June 22 and goes through August 1st (6 weeks)
    • Finish an activity card and earn 1 of 3 pins

Sumas Days

  • June 26-27 by Sumas Chamber of Commerce
  • June 26 FOSL will sell popcorn and live spun cotton candy
  • June 27 FOSL will be in the parade and have a booth near WCLS
    • parade: show up and bring library friends. We will line at up the bookmobile
    • booth: strategic planning questioning from WCLS
      • WCLS figure out how to spend tax money for the next while
      • FOSL book reading with Chip or Ashylnn (haven’t asked either yet)
      • FOSL promote summer reading, something kids can complete for the summer reading card for us. WCLS will look into this
      • FOSL try and get people to sign up for a card
      • Bring a game to play; quick teach and play
      • have a contact form
  • Volunteer sing up:
    • corn hole: D, Sarah, Samantha, Nancy
    • parade: not Nancy, Samantha, or Lizette as they are in their own floats
    • booth: corn hole + parade
      • NOTE: we need to clean the FOSL shed and make sure the tent is clean
      • have Movie in the Park big sign at our booth to promote
      • We will get that to Paul by 6/7
  • Bookmark design
    • FOSL design on one side, FOSL info on the back with our events
  • Booth activities to support Summer Reading

Library Reopening Party

  • Tentative ideas:
    • Decorations
    • Treats/Giveaways
    • Flyers
  • Alternate idea from WCLS: reopening is a soft launch, hold off for a proper reopening party
    • We are doing this, and will do decorations, treats/giveaways, and flyers for the GRAND reopening

Movie in the Park

  • Event flyers - a draft is made but needs to be finalized once we have a sponsor (or confirmed don’t)
  • Business proposal letter - a draft is made and approved by FOSL leadership
  • Concessions:
    • popcorn, cotton candy, and drinks for sure will be offered
    • nachos OR hot dog; lean towards nachos but need to coordinate with a food truck vendor we are still locking down
  • Food trucks:
    • Ballistic Brew - Jill won’t be here but they might still be able to attend
    • Cicchitti’s Pizza - I checked and they are booked; They provided a list of alternative food trucks to check with
    • Check with Cristpita’s; would be good to get them back in Sumas
    • Priority is to have an affordable, quick option that is still “worth it” for the vendor

Extra Bits

  • Website updates! New blog post detailing summer events
  • Fall BINGO changed from Nov to Oct 31 as a Halloween costume party. BINGO will take place before trick or treating
    • Trunk or Treat starts at 6:30pm
