Event Description
Join Friends of the Sumas Library for a free outdoor screening of Disney-Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. (2001) at Sycamore Park! Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy a summer evening under the stars with family and friends.
Ballistic Brew will be there selling themed drinks, while FOSL is offering paid concessions including nachos, popcorn, cotton candy, and drinks (soda, water).
Monsters, Inc.
Lovable Sulley and his wisecracking sidekick Mike Wazowski are the top scare team at Monsters, Inc., the scream-processing factory in Monstropolis. When a little girl named Boo wanders into their world, it’s the monsters who are scared silly, and it’s up to Sulley and Mike to keep her out of sight and get her back home.
A movie is more than its awards, but it sure doesn’t hurt to have ’em. In the 74th Academy Awards of 2002, Monsters Inc. was nominated for several awards, winning one.
- Best Animated Feature, lost to Shrek
- Best Original Score, lost to The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring
- Best Sound Editing, lost to Pearl Harbor
- Best Original Song, which it won!
And here is a fun fact about the 5-year-old actress who played young Boo:
Gibbs was so young during production that most of her lines were captured via real or simulated play scenarios designed to elicit the required audio reactions, rather than any traditional line work, including being followed around the Pixar office with a microphone by the crew.
It is wild that this movie came out nearly 25 years ago, and we are so excited to share it with a new audience!
Special Thanks
Events like this cost money, particularly the movie licensing fees ($$$). Luckily, we have strong local groups that support each other. We want to thank the Everson Lions Club (eversonlionsclub.org) for their generous donation to cover the licensing fee for Monster’s Inc.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Concessions
Starting at 7pm, Friends of the Sumas Library will be providing paid concessions:
- nachos - $3
- cotton candy - $3
- popcorn - $1
- drinks (water, soda) - $1
If you are looking for a way to support the Friends, we will also be selling FOSL shirts and stickers. Both feature original hand-drawn artwork created by Heather and Deanna who live right here in Sumas.
Make any purchase and you will receive a free event sticker, part of a series of stickers we have been giving out at our various events. This sticker is not for sale and will only be given out during this event. If you got one at our Spring Adult Social back in March, or recently at the Sumas Community Days, then you know these are pretty cool stickers!
Ballistic Brew
Ballistic Brew (facebook) is back! If you are craving something we aren’t selling at our concessions, then check them out anytime from 7pm until the movie starts.
Ballistic Brew is a “mobile beverage trailer”, offering coffee, drinks, and other treats. Like during last year’s movies, a special menu has been dreamed up themed to this year’s movie.
Want to own a copy of Monsters, Inc.?
FOSL will be giving out a Blu-ray/DVD combo of the movie Monsters, Inc. prior to the start of the movie! Participants of all ages may express their interest by wearing a monster mask. Members of FOSL will pick their favorite mask (not necessarily the “best” mask) to be awarded a physical copy of the evening’s movie. Supplies will be provided at the event so you have everything you need to make a mask right there in the park. While purchased masks are acceptable, we will be prioritizing homemade masks.
