D. Old Business
-
August Movie in the Park:
-
Moneys brought in: $625 cash, $271.94 credit card via Paypal
-
Good: turnout was good (estimate 100 people), more volunteers and earlier set-up time (6pm) so set-up was better.
-
Bad:
- Playground issues: one complaint about kids on playground at night with flashlights were disruptive to those watching movie. FOSL asked kids to stop playing as it was dangerous and disruptive, but they continued to play. Next year, FOSL will discuss with City what to do as they probably do not want to be liable for any injuries after dark. FOSL will also make an announcement before the movie to stay off the playground.
- Candy wrappers: type of candy had too many small wrappers, so after the movie this garbage was all over the place. Thanks to Deanne for picking up so much of it!
-
Ideas for next year:
- glowsticks
- roll of caution tape or yellow tape to put around projector and cables as there were kids running through this area
- bigger and better signage (concessions area, etc.0
- candy: less small, individual wrappers; candy should all be the quantity/price (ie not 2 of this type OR 1 of this type thing); more chocolate! Consider pre-packaging a variety of candies together - but this might take more work.
- trail mix or other “healthier” option than candy - could this be an allergy issue though?
- brown bags for people to carry their items in…can also be used as a trash bag to put their garbage in so not left on the ground. Make an announcement on this before the movie (ex “help us keep the area clean”)

E. New Business
-
Fall Carnival
-
List of activities, items needed, and number of volunteers needed at activity
- cornhole: 4 sets, passive activity
- potato sack races: potato sacks, 2 volunteers
- cupcake walk: cupcakes (FOSL members will make, and will try to find others to make) cupcake quantity needed not determined, music and speakers, 2 volunteers
- egg relay: spoons & eggs, 2 volunteers
- pie in the face: This is a prize for some of the games, rather than an opportunity for anybody to throw a pie. Recipients will be staggered throughout the day so nobody needs to be there all day. Probably need 5 people to volunteer as recipients. Sumas Mayor Bruce Bosch has volunteered to be a recipient of a pie in the face. Other potential people are: Sumas Police Chief, Sumas Fire Chief, Sumas Elementary Principal or teacher, Sumas Library Manager Paul Fullner. Need 2 volunteers to run this.
- Photos and stories with a mermaid (Ashlyn)- will be available from 12pm - 3pm. Lee will be there to support Ashlyn and plans to be dressed in a pirate costume. Need a shade tent, kiddie pool with something that looks like water (not really water), chair (Ashlyn will provide). No additional volunteers beyond Lee are needed.
- Disney princess(es): Tentative. Will be wondering around for photos with kids. No additional volunteers needed.
- Magnetic fishing game: tentative, Brett will see what he can put together
- Donut or candy apple on a string contest: Tentative. Need food item, string. 2 volunteers needed.
- Cotton candy and popcorn (popcorn is tentative): machines, food items, bags/sticks, 2 volunteers. These items will be sold for $1 or $2 each (price undetermined at this point)
-
Layout: ongoing passive activities will be held in the area next to the library/playground. Active activities held in the open field across north of the library building.
-
Schedule of events will be created by Nancy and Samantha
-
Bad weather plan:
- have garbage bags available for people to make into ponchos
- use Community/Senior Center for some activities.
-
Potential additional needs:
- something to mark where lines should form for the mermaid and/or game
- garbage bags
-
-
Holiday Decor - put on hold until next meeting
-
February/March event - put on hold until next meeting
