D. Old Business

  • Sumas Days Parade

    • Four people walked in the parade (Sarah, Brett, Robin H. and Heather L.) along with Fosl the dinosaur, worn by Deanna).
    • Feedback regarding parade was that it was a good time (“So fun!” commented Sarah).
    • The parade was the reveal of Fosl the dinosaur and the amazing costume that Deanna L. made - she is also the person who wore the costume.
    • Those walking in the parade noticed that many of the kids were excited to see Fosl and yelled out “Dinosaur!” as Fosl walked by.
    • Walkers handed out bookmarks that said “Sumas Library “ on the front, and “created by FOSL” on the back. Brett and Sarah made 500 of these!
    • The WCLS Bookmobile followed the walkers in the parade. People loved that there were bubbles coming out of the Bookmobile and that the Bookmobile was so easy to spot.
  • Sumas Days Booth

    • The FOSL booth at the park was set-up next to the library booth. Set-up occurred around 9:30am. with the help of Sarah, Brett, Heather L, and Robin H.
    • Sarah and Brett hung up their creative and fun backdrop of a volcano and valley used as a background for photos with Fosl.
    • Lynn A. stayed at the tent during the parade and continued to add ribbons to the extra Sumas Library bookmarks.
    • After the parade, photos with Fosl were available, along with a dino dig. Some kids were very into the dino dig and spent a lot of time there.
    • Comments by FOSL members were that the dino dig material was a bit to difficult to dig into.
    • Besides the dino dig and Fosl photos, bookmarks and flyers for the upcoming movie hosted by FOSL on July 26 th were given out.
    • In addition to others already mentioned, Nancy and Samantha helped out at the booth as well.
  • Ideas/changes for next year:

    • banner or signage in the parade. Lizette said she got a banner for the History Museum from Grandview Signs for about $100.
    • Nancy suggested that kids could help create a banner next spring for use in the parade – then they would be excited to see the banner in the parade as well.
    • Also need to have some type of signage on or near the tent – either a banner, or a sandwich board sign, or possibly both.

E. New Business

  • Movies in the Park

    • 1st one is July 26th showing The Goofy Movie.
    • Second movie is August 23rd , but movie unknown yet.
    • People will be able to vote on choice for the next movie from July 26 – August 3rd either online (Brett is working on setting this up) or at the library.
    • Concessions will be open beginning at 7:30pm until the start of the movie about 9pm. (ie no concessions during the movie).
    • In addition to past year concessions of soda, candy and popcorn, there will also be hotdogs and nachos. Nancy will apply for food permit from the Whatcom County Health Department.
    • Sarah and Brett have many bottles of water from previous events and will bring those.
  • Fall Carnival

    • Nancy and Samantha suggested a carnival for the fall (date TBD but probably sometime in September).

    • Ideas of what to have include

      • cake/cupcake walk
      • apple bobbing
      • sack races
      • fishing for ducks/rain gutter duck race
      • cornhole games (Cayla will email Tina at Chamber to inquire about using theirs)
      • silent auction (Lynn A)
      • pie in the face stations (whipped cream pies) thrown at local people, such as mayor, library manager, Sumas Elementary principal, police chief (Samantha will contact these people)
    • Other ideas include bringing in other groups such as the NV Boosters, maybe to sell/give away caramel apples?
